There was and there were


We use there was (singular) and there were (plural) when we want to say that something was located in a place or existed in the PAST.



      There was a book on the desk. / There were many books on the shelf. 

We use there wasn´t (singular) / there weren’t (plural) to say that something wasn´t located in a place or didn’t exist: 


      There wasn´t a book on the desk. / There weren’t any books on the shelf. 

We use Was there…? (singular) / Were there...? (plural) to ask whether something was located in a place or existed: 


      Was there a book on the desk? / Were there any books on the shelf?
